MACEDONIA
The Republic of Macedonia (North Macedonia) launched its first NAP in 2013 to cover the period 2013-2015; there does not appear to be an update.
Objectives of the 2013-2015 NAP:
- Strengthen the gender perspective in the formulation and implementation of the Peace, Security and Defense Policy of the Republic of Macedonia.
- Strengthen the participation and contribution of women to international, civilian and military missions in which the Republic of Macedonia takes part;
- Prevent violence and protect women's rights in the time of peace, conflict and humanitarian disasters.
Commentary:
Macedonia places priority on being a regional power working in cooperation with the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in South-eastern Europe. Hence the focus of the Macedonian NAP is predominantly regional implementation of UNSCR 1325.
Civil Society involvement in development of the NAP:
There is reference to involvement of civil society in the implementation of the NAP though there are no further details about their role, and Annex 1 detailing the workshops held to develop the NAP lists a few civil society organisations.
UN Peacekeeping Statistics:
At September 2023, North Macedonia was not contributing any personnel to UN missions. At May 2023 Macedonia was contributing 3 peacekeepers, all of whom were male (one staff officer and two troop members).
Women in peacekeeping:
Although Macedonia has set a goal of incorporating a gender perspective in the peacekeeping operations and missions, it has provided only a few peacekeepers to UN peace operations and all of these have been male.
