SecurityWomen participates in UNODC symposium on crime in East Africa region
January 10, 2023
Juliet Colman, founder and Director of SecurityWomen participated in a regional symposium organised by the UN’s Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) held in Nairobi on 15-16 December 2022. More than sixty participants and experts from over fifteen countries participated in the symposium in person and online.
The symposium adopted a set of recommendations for the consideration of the East African Police Chiefs Co-operation Organisation’s technical group (EAPCCO) aimed at promoting broader inclusion of women in law enforcement and criminal justice. Recommendations also included development of gender-sensitive, human rights-based, and rule of law-centred strategies to interact with female suspects, offenders, and survivors. These recommendations will be circulated in early 2023. They represent an important step forward for the East Africa region in mainstreaming gender issues within law enforcement and criminal justice systems.
